TRISTAN VI (2007)

The 6th edition took place June 10-15, 2007, in Phuket Island, Thailand.

Professor Michel Bierlaire, Chairman of the conference, recalls the rollercoaster series of events that led up to holding TRISTAN VI in Thailand on Phuket Island:

« The decision to go to Sri Lanka was made during TRISTAN V, in Guadeloupe, in 2004. On December 26, 2004, the tsunami wiped out Sri Lanka, as well as Indonesia, Thailand, and many other countries.

Pitu and I visited Sri Lanka in Spring 2005 (March, I think) and we met with local officials from the government, and local professors from the university. We identified a venue for the conference (in Moratuwa, close to Columbo) and a local support for the logistics.

In 2006, the war between the Sri Lankan army and the Tamil Tigers became very violent, with many casualties, including in Columbo. Needless to say, we decided that it was not safe to organize the conference there.

Therefore, we had to organize again the conference. It was decided to go to Thailand. And we have selected the Meridien Hotel in Phuket as a venue. It was announced to the community on September 19, 2006. The very same day, a coup d’état took place in Thailand.

Fortunately, the political situation in Thailand calmed down, and we could organize the conference in Phuket in June. »
